Heart-healthy foods and active lifestyle

Your heart works every second of every day without a single day off. The good news: the habits that keep it working are neither complicated nor expensive — but they must be consistent. Here are the five we emphasise with our own patients.

1. Watch the Salt, Not Just the Sugar

Hypertension is Uganda's silent epidemic, and salt is its loudest accomplice. Season with herbs, lemon and garlic instead of extra stock cubes; taste food before adding salt at the table; go easy on processed meats. Small daily reductions compound into real blood pressure protection.

2. Move for 30 Minutes Most Days

Brisk walking counts. So does dancing in your kitchen or cycling to the shop. The target is 150 minutes a week of moderate activity — enough to strengthen the heart muscle, improve circulation and help control weight, sugars and stress simultaneously.

3. Know Your Numbers — Yearly

Blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol tell no lies and cause no symptoms until damage is done. An annual screening visit (we do them at your home) catches trends early, when lifestyle changes alone can still turn them around.

4. Sleep Like It's Medicine — Because It Is

Chronic poor sleep raises blood pressure and drives unhealthy cravings. Aim for 7–8 hours, keep a regular schedule where possible, and mention persistent snoring or daytime sleepiness to a physician — they can signal sleep apnoea, which strains the heart.

5. Take Stress Seriously

Unmanaged stress keeps blood pressure elevated and pushes people toward smoking, alcohol and skipped medications. Prayer, exercise, time with friends and honest conversations all count as cardiac care. If stress feels unmanageable, that itself deserves a consultation.

One bonus tip: if you smoke, quitting does more for your heart than everything else on this list combined. Your physician can help you plan it properly.
